KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT
NNAT3 format, timing and directions
Pearson’s NNAT3 administration guidance describes 48 items and 30 minutes of working time. Preparation and directions make the full session approximately 35–45 minutes.

Working time and session time are different
Thirty minutes is the published working time, not a promise that the entire appointment lasts exactly half an hour. Getting students settled, giving directions and preparing materials take additional time. Your school supplies the actual schedule and arrival instructions.
The rough arithmetic of 48 items in 30 minutes is about 38 seconds per item. That is an average, not a rule to spend exactly 38 seconds on every problem. Some problems may be faster than others, and practice should not train a rigid countdown for each item.
Visual problems and five choices
The public NNAT3 manuals show a visual problem with five answer choices. A student needs to select the response that completes the task. In our original worked examples, choices are labeled A–E to make the explanations easy to follow.
Before adding a timer to independent practice, confirm that the child knows where to look, how to select one answer and how to move to the next problem. An interface mistake is different from a reasoning mistake.
Paper or digital?
| If the school uses… | Useful familiarity activity |
|---|---|
| Paper | Practice scanning a diagram and its choices, then recording one response in the requested place. |
| A device | Practice deliberate selection, checking the chosen response and reading the practice directions. |
| An arrangement you have not seen | Ask the school what students will need to know; do not assume our preview behaves exactly like the official system. |
Navigation, allowed materials, corrections and other administration details should come from the school’s instructions. Do not teach a rule about going back, skipping or guessing without checking the directions for the actual administration.
Learning mode before timed mode
- Use a small untimed set to establish the response routine.
- Review a missed clue and compare the tempting wrong choice.
- Use fresh questions to check transfer of the reasoning.
- Add short timed practice only when the task is familiar.
What independent practice cannot tell you
A short set of original puzzles is not an official NNAT3 form. Completing it quickly or accurately does not provide an official NAI, percentile rank or placement prediction. Read the score guide to keep those distinctions clear.
